No doubt Jen did this because, 1, she was still struggling a bit as an actor and/or, 2, because she was friends with Ashlee Simpson (Jessica's sister, who was married to Nick) and so she agreed to do it without getting paid. I remember when the show originally aired (The Newlyweds), Nick said that he did the video really cheap because his label refused to pay for it. I guess they really didn't want to lead the album with this song but Nick wanted to, so he paid for it himself by using a really cheap set and getting his friends to act in it. A little trivia: Dax and Jen originally played this skit for the first season of Ashton Kutcher's "Punk'd" show where Jessica had convinced Nick that they were her backwater, trailer-trash family who were coming to stay at their house for a few weeks. Nick tried not to be rude- it was pretty funny- but eventually he started getting nervous that they were going to stay longer than expected. He was really grateful when he learned that he was just being punk'd. He asked them to be in the Shut Up video as the same characters.
